Hive inspection checklist

Use the same basic order each time so your notes become easier to compare.

Inspection order

  • Entrance activity and general behavior
  • Equipment condition and available space
  • Queen seen OR evidence of a recently laying queen
  • Eggs and young larvae
  • Brood amount and pattern
  • Pollen and nectar/honey stores
  • Queen cells or swarm-related signs
  • Small hive beetles / other visible pests
  • Varroa monitoring result when due
  • Anything unusual: odor, dead brood, deformed bees, moisture, comb damage, robbing, fighting
  • Actions taken today
  • What to re-check next time
